drive by downloads are programs that are automaticaly sent to your computer when you visit html email messages. the downloads happen without your consent and is a very common methos for spyware and adware to get onto your system.
to avoid this from happening is yo make sure your browser settings you are using are high enough to be able to detect unathorized downloads.
